Na-Jia (纳甲), meaning “Received first Heavenly Stem”, is an ancient Chinese metaphysical system, particularly in I Ching studies, used to correlating the Heavenly Stems (天干) and Earthly Branches (地支) with the Eight Trigrams (八卦) and 64 Hexagrams (重卦) to analyze and predict natural and human events.

EIGHT-TRIGRAMS correspondance with 10-HEAVENLY-STEMS 納甲

Lihai Ji ctext states:

  • YANG numbers starting from S0⊕WOOD as 1 and ending with S8⊕WATER as 9, following a forward sequence associated with ☰HEAVEN in the Yi (易).
  • YIN numbers starting from S1⊖WOOD as 2 and end with S9⊖WATER as 10, following a reverse sequence associated with ☷EARTH in the Yi (易).

  • THUNDER shows a first application (of ☷EARTH to ☰HEAVEN), resulting in getting (the first of) its male (or YANG), and hence is associated with S6⊕METAL
  • WIND shows a first application (of ☰HEAVEN to ☷EARTH), resulting in getting (the first of) its female (or YIN), and hence is associated with S7⊖METAL
  • WATER shows a second application (of ☷EARTH to ☰HEAVEN), resulting in getting (the second of) its male (or YANG), and hence is associated with S4⊕EARTH
  • FIRE shows a second application (of ☰HEAVEN to ☷EARTH), resulting in getting the second of its female (or YIN), and hence is associated with S5⊖EARTH
  • MOUNTAIN shows a third application (of ☷EARTH to ☰HEAVEN), resulting in getting (the third of) its male (or YANG), and hence is associated with S2⊕FIRE
  • LAKE shows a third application (of ☰HEAVEN to ☷EARTH), resulting in getting (the third of) its female (or YIN), and hence is associated with S3⊖FIRE

  • YANG is born in the north and completes in the south, so ☰HEAVEN begins at 00S0B0甲子 and ends at 18S8B6壬午.
  • YIN is born in the south and completes in the north, so ☷EARTH begins at 31S1B7乙未 and ends at 49S9B1癸丑.

  • THUNDER and ☴WIND are first application, correspond to S6⊕METAL and S7⊖METAL at B0NORTH and Chou B1N30E.
  • WATER and ☲FIRE are second application, correspond to S4⊕EARTH and S5⊖EARTH at B2E30N and B3EAST.
  • MOUNTAIN and☱LAKE are third application, correspond to S2⊕FIRE and S3⊖FIRE at B4E30S and B5S30E.

Kaoyuan (Investigation of Origins) ctext states:

  • HEAVEN corresponds to S0⊕WOOD and S8⊕WATER. ☷EARTH corresponds to S1⊖WOOD and S9⊖WATER. ☰HEAVEN and ☷EARTH encompass the beginning and end of cycles.
  • For the remaining six TRIGRAMS, their assignments follow the principle of constructing TRIGRAMS from bottom to top, as HEXAGRAMS are drawn from the bottom line upward.
  • THUNDER and ☴WIND represent YIN and YANG starting from below, ☳THUNDER corresponds to S6⊕METAL. ☴WIND corresponds to S7⊖METAL.
  • WATER and ☲FIRE represent YIN and YANG interacting in the middle. ☵WATER corresponds to S4⊕EARTH. ☲FIRE corresponds to S5⊖EARTH.
  • MOUNTAIN and ☱LAKE represent YIN and YANG reaching their extremes at the top. ☶MOUNTAIN corresponds to S2⊕FIRE. ☱LAKE corresponds to S3⊖FIRE.
  • YANG HEAVENLY-STEMS: S0⊕WOOD, S2⊕FIRE, S4⊕EARTH, S6⊕METAL, S8⊕WATER are assigned to YANG TRIGRAMS.
  • YIN HEAVENLY-STEMS: S1⊖WOOD, S3⊖FIRE, S5⊖EARTH, S7⊖METAL, S9⊖WATER are assigned to YIN TRIGRAMS.

Kaoyuan (Investigation of Origins) ctext states:

  • This text describes how the six TRIGRAMS correspond to moon phases. ☵WATER and ☲FIRE are the Sun and the Moon themselves, positioned at the center and not used.
  • THUNDER represents the first stage birth of YANG (一陽始生), symbolizing the beginning of light. Observed at dusk when the Moon appears in the S6⊕METAL direction.
  • LAKE represents the second stagegrowing of YANG (二陽浸盛), symbolizing the waxing crescent. Observed at dusk when the Moon appears in the S3⊖FIRE direction.
  • HEAVEN represents the third stagefull of YANG (三陽盛滿), symbolizing the full moon. Observed at dusk when the Moon appears in the S0⊕WOOD direction.
  • WIND represents the first stage birth of YIN (一隂始生), symbolizing the waning gibbous. Observed at dawn when the Moon appears in the S7⊖METAL direction.
  • MOUNTAIN represents the second stage growing of YIN (二隂浸盛), symbolizing the last quarter. Observed at dawn when the Moon appears in the S2⊕FIRE direction.
  • EARTH represents the third stage full of YIN (三隂盛滿), symbolizing the new moon (晦). Observed at dawn when the Moon appears in the S1⊖WOOD direction.
  • These lunar phases and their corresponding trigrams are aligned with the Na Jia.

Kaoyuan (Investigation of Origins) ctext states:

  • This text explains the method of dividing the six LINES of the EIGHT-TRIGRAM to correspond to the six EARTHLY-BRANCHES.
  • HEAVEN as Inner TRIGRAM represents S0⊕WOOD and governs B0NORTH, B2E30N, and B4E30S, so, First NINE (初九) is Jiazi (甲子), Second Nine (九二) is Jiayin (甲寅), Third Nine (九三) is Jiachen (甲辰)
  • HEAVEN as Outer TRIGRAM represents represents S8⊕WATER and governs B6SOUTH, B8W30S, and BAW30N, so, Fourth Nine (九四) is Renwu (壬午), Fifth Nine (九五) is Renshen (壬申), Topmost Nine (上九) is Renxu (壬戌)
  • Kun (坤) as Inner TRIGRAM represents S1⊖WOOD and governs B7S30W, B5S30E, and B3EAST, so Initial Six (初六): Yiwei (乙未), Second Six (六二): Yisi (乙巳), Third Six (六三): Yimao (乙卯)
  • Kun (坤) as Outer TRIGRAM represents S9⊖WATER and governs B1N30E, BBN30W, and B9WEST, so Fourth Six (六四): Guichou (癸丑), Fifth Six (六五): Guihai (癸亥), Top Six (上六): Guiyou (癸酉)
  • Because Qian (乾) and Kun (坤) each govern two Heavenly Stems (天干), they are divided into inner and outer trigrams.
  • THUNDER only governs S6⊕METAL, so, Initial Nine (初九): Gengzi (庚子), Second Six (六二): Gengyin (庚寅), Third Six (六三): Gengchen (庚辰), Fourth Nine (九四): Gengwu (庚午), Fifth Six (六五): Gengshen (庚申), Top Six (上六): Gengxu (庚戌)
  • WIND only governs S7⊖METAL, so, Initial Six (初六): Xinchou (辛丑), Second Nine (九二): Xinhai (辛亥), Third Nine (九三): Xinyou (辛酉), Fourth Six (六四): Xinwei (辛未), Fifth Nine (九五): Xinsi (辛巳), Top Nine (上九): Xinmao (辛卯)
  • The other four TRIGRAMS, ☵WATER, ☲FIRE, ☶MOUNTAIN, and ☱LAKE, follow similar patterns based on the examples above.
