When you grasp, mendicant, you’re bound by Māra. Not grasping, you’re free from the Wicked One.

若隨使使者，即隨使死；若隨使死者，為取所縛。若不隨使使，則不隨使死；不隨使死者，則於取解脫。

When you conceive, mendicant, you’re bound by Māra. Not conceiving, you’re free from the Wicked One.

動搖時，則為魔所縛；若不動者，則解脫波旬。

Bhikkhu

Mendicant, you’re measured against what you have an underlying tendency for, and you’re reckoned by what you’re measured against. You’re not measured against what you have no underlying tendency for, and you’re not reckoned by what you’re not measured against.

隨使使、隨使死者，則增諸數；若不隨使使、不隨使死者，則不增諸數。

saṅkhaṁ gacchati - reckoned 增諸數

非我 非我所應 非餘人所應 結所繫法

  • Mendicant, give up desire for whatever’s impermanent.
  • Mendicant, give up desire for whatever’s suffering.
  • Mendicant, give up desire for what is not-self.
  • Mendicant, give up desire for whatever doesn’t belong to self.
  • Mendicant, give up desire for whatever is shaped by arousal.
